The day started with another scramble for the record books. Harry Passenger having taken the record for the youngest to play in the 1st XI last season missed the club’s record for the Premier League by just 26 days!
Torquay won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket which kept low at times (especially at the scorebox end) and a few popped from all accounts.
The innings got off to a disastrous start with a diamond duck for James Degg - Sandford’s old warhorses Sandy Allen and Trevor Anning combining. Calamity struck again when George Allen was run out by the evergreen Adrian Small – there never appeared to be a run there. Unfortunately, no one really got going until Tom Drake and Tim Western came together and put on 67 for the 6th wicket. Senior pro, Western played the supporting role while Drake went onto score an unbeaten 69 to set Sandford an interesting total.
Sandford got off to a flyer with Richard Foan and Sandy Allen. However, Tom Drake then put the brakes on with 4 for 35 ably supported by Elliot Moses with 2 for 25 to set up a very close finish. The momentum kept swinging both ways but Sandford crept over the line eventually by 2 wickets thanks to a 35 run 9th wicket partnership between Chris Simpson and Pete Steer.
Off the field though we were successful scoring several brownie points with the umpires – Ben Pittman on his first visit to the ground was amazed by the hospitality and what we (?) provide the umpires, “no other club does this.” Even, Tolly a regular visitor couldn’t believe the level we (?) have taken it to.
Torquay 211 for 8 (50 overs)
T Drake 69*
T Western 28
T Anning 3-42
Sandford 212 for 8 (44.5 overs)
N Bettis 39

Sandford (19 pts) beat Torquay (8 pts) by 2 wickets
Minus the two stars from last week it was going to be a struggle despite the recruiting of Dinesh Giri who we welcome to the club.
Torquay batted 1st with bulk of the runs coming from skipper Matt McCann (63) and senior pro Ben Passenger (25). Marc Woodward with 4 for 12 was the best of the Plymstock 2nd XI bowlers.
Plymstock knocked the runs off for the loss of just three wickets. Paul Birleson top scored with with an unbeaten 63 supported by Brian Gayland with 38. Alas there was no particular bowling of note from Torquay.
Torquay 2nd XI 140 for 9
M McCann 63
M Woodward 4-12
Plymstock 2nd XI 141 for 3
P Birleson 63*
Plymstock 2nd XI (19 pts) beat Torquay 2nd XI (4 pts) by 7 wickets

Player of the Day
A very simple decision for his heroics with bat and ball for the 1st XI – Tom Drake.
