Torquay played host to Plymouth, whose survival on the last day of the season in 2009 condemned Torquay to their first stay outside the top division. Holidays, injuries and military duty had already claimed three players which left Sonny Baker having to put his broken body on the line – basically making the numbers up as he couldn’t bowl!
Plymouth won the toss and unsurprisingly asked Torquay to have a bat considering all the rain. Torquay got off to a reasonable start before Elliot Moses fell for 9. Mitchell Pugh went onto to score 52 before he was brilliantly run out by the veteran Steve Luffman. George Allen scored 38 and Tom Drake scored 40 before former Torquay spinning starlet Matt Petherbridge claimed 4 for 43 – the best of the Plymouth bowlers. Torquay posted an interesting total of 218 for 8 in their 50 overs though probably 20 / 30 runs short.
Just 10 balls into their reply, Plymouth’s Rob Bennett dispatched Elliot Moses for a 6. Match ball lost. George Allen asked whether there was a new as a replacement, which unlike most clubs the response came back “of course.” Bennett was soon out which meant run machine Faizan Riaz came to the crease. Riaz despite being target driven with another one in his sights took some risks and got lucky on more than one occasion. Plymouth reached 142 for 3 and were seemingly cruising but then fell to 176 for 7. Was an unlikely victory on despite Riaz being in full flow? On 61 he had passed his runs tally for 2018 with 2 matches still to play. Riaz and Sam Stein saw Plymouth home with 26 balls to spare. Chris Kelmere with 3 for 48 was the best of the Torquay bowlers.

Torquay travelled the short distance to taken on Abbotskerwell this time under the leadership of Chairman, Ian Baker.
Unfortunately the Chairman lost the toss and Torquay were asked to have a bat. No one scored significant runs – the Chairman top scoring with 19 despite a bash on the arm. Torquay were all out for 105 in 41.3 overs. Ben Cowdry with 4 for 21 was the best of the Abbotskerswell bowlers.
In reply, Abbotskerswell got to 57 for 3 – Charlie Hill being third out for 44. The senior bowlers Ian Baker and Ant Nadar claiming all three. It was then left to the youngsters Dylan Karssens and Noah Rider to claim the rest with Karssens finishing with 4 for 12 and Rider 3 for 18. Abbotskerswell collapsed to 82 all out in just 26.3 overs.

Player of the Day
After just missing out last week it goes to Dylan Karssens for his 4 for 12. The youngsters are certainly racking up the weekly awards – which can only be good for the future of the club.
Respect to last week’s recipient, Daniel Western for immediately putting Dylan’s name forward as Dylan just lost out to him.
