Evo dips in and out watching the normal series with the hope as a non-graduate of answering one question. The Celebrity version is always more interesting depending on who appears. With Ade Edmondson captain of the Manchester team who he has actually spoken to, and Monty Panesar on the Loughborough team, Evo took a little more notice.
His ears certainly pricked up when a question on slow left bowlers came up for Manchester. From the descriptions “Bedi” and “Vettori” were two of the answers – no problem there. However, the other description and you would come up with the answer “Lance Gibbs” which was the “correct” answer given. Though not even at school when Gibbs retired as player, alarm bells immediately rang. Gibbs was surely an off spinner – a quick check in his cricketing library confirmed this. Too late for Jeremy Paxman to consult the 3rd umpire, rescind his call and call a “No Ball”!
Although “time” had been called and it didn’t alter the result of the match. Evo decided to flag up what he believed, correction, “knew” to be an error. An email pinged off to the Producer on New Year Day. The first day back after the New Year break and a response from the Questions Editor. An apology and “procedures are being reviewed.”
As Evo said, “little did I think I would ever catch University Challenge out, but it was so nice they immediately put their hands up – the email was both professional and genuine.”
