CRICKET EXPLAINED - part 5

5. The Duck

Dismissed without scoring & if you are an opening batsman getting a duck makes it a very long day indeed. There are a variety of ducks which are always accompanied by much swearing.

Golden duck - out first ball.

King pair - 2 first ball ducks in a match (might retire!).

Peking duck - bowled by a Chinaman for nothing.

Duck l'orange - bowled by a peach.

Bombay duck - a fishy decision (definitely retiring).

Crispy duck - bowled by a sizzler.

Donald Duck - bowled by the S.A. fast bowling legend Alan Donald (quite an honour).

P.S. A 'Royal duck' is getting out to the first ball of an innings. Sadly this happened to me when Torquay were playing a league game at Sidmouth. To rub salt into the wound, as I walked disconsolately around the ground, both Dave Traylor & Gary Wallen scored hundreds (a very long afternoon!).
