DCL Round 3 (part 1)

1st XI

Abbotskerswell under the leadership of Nick Watkin, Yauy’s former right hand man, won the toss and asked Torquay to field on one of the hottest days in recent cricketing history.

Prior to the umpires calling “Play”, Mark Tyler bravely ventured up into Evo’s new “nest” for the season – formerly known as the Player’s Balcony, to take the team photo.

Sonny Baker soon had Charlie Hill caught by a fantastic catch from Tom Drake.  Edddie Smout-Cooper who turned out midweek at the Rec last season repaired some of the damage before being run out for 31.  Abbots old boy but now Torquay skipper, Chris Kelmere, then spun his magic claiming 4 for 24.  Tom Drake put his body on the line despite it not being 100% and took 3 for 15.  The other main scorers for Abbotskerswell were Richard Acton with 31 and Connor Adams with 28.  Abbotskerswell failed to bat their overs out and were all out for 166 in just 38.1 overs.

Torquay were soon in trouble with Steve Lewis and Noah Rider not really troubling the scorers.  Enter Tim Western rolling back the years and master blaster Chris Kelmere.  Western batted through and finished undefeated on 59.  Kelmere or should that be Kels the Cat with all the lives he had finally fell for 55 – a more sedate innings than usual.  When Kelmere was out, enter Tom Drake who wasn’t going to hang around with 36 off just 29 balls.  The best of Abbotskerswell bowling from Tom Heath with 1 for 9 off 4 overs.  Torquay won with 5.5 overs to spare and with 7 wickets in hand.

Come the end though there was an intriguing battle.  Would Torquay secure by then what was going to be a routine win before England pull off what for most the afternoon a far less likely win?  The mighty Torquay just winning the race.

It would be wrong also not to mention Harry Passenger, who performed the Water Boy duties fantastically on such a hot day.

Next week the 1st XI post-match are apparently going to hold their own version of the Boxing Day Swim.  Although in the light of events in the week, one player is banned from participating though!
