DEVON CRICKET LEAGUE RD 12 2021

1ST XI

Finally the much awaited league match with arch rivals Barton CC 1st XI – the first one having fallen foul to the weather. After some issues from all accounts yesterday, Torquay won the toss and elected to bat but soon regretted it, slumping to 19 for 3 and never really recovered. There was though so damage limitation on the middle by Tom Drake with 29 and young Harry Passenger with 17.The last wicket partnership of 32 between Kesh Wijerathna with 32 and young Blaise Baker who survived 28 balls without scoring but till he was last man out gave Torquay some hope. Torquay were finally all out for 140 with 4 overs to go – just not surviving the ignominy of having to go out to bowl before tea. Stand in skipper Stuart Bowker and Matt Lipton shared the spoils with the ball with 3 for 23 and 3 for 34 respectively.

In reply Torquay old boy Shaun Needham and Matt Lipton got Barton off to a fine start putting on 62 for the first wicket. The break through coming just before tea. Danger man Darren Cowley was next to fall cheaply and when Needham fell for 43 with the score on 90, there was a slight glimmer of hope. Two further wickets did fall but Barton got over the line with nearly ten overs to spare. The best of the Torquay bowlers were Chris Kelmere with 2 for 25 and Kesh Wijerathna with 2 for 65. Note must also be made of young Harry Passenger who went for just 7 runs off his 6.2 overs.

Was there any fun and games on the field of play after all these years – I will leave it to your imagination!

The 1st XI have an immediate opportunity to bounce back from this disappointment in the Aaron Printers Cup Semi Final against Paignton CC 2nd XI at South Devon CC. Next up in the league is a trip to Budleigh Salterton CC 1st XI, the only ground in this country below sea level and where Harry Passenger and Noah Rider combined as 13 year olds to dismiss a batsman.

2ND XI

The visit to Teignmouth & Shaldon CC 2nd XI unfortunately fell foul, of the scourge of Covid19 which alas has visited the club for the first time. The outcome of the match will be decided in the next 10 days. Next up (hopefully) for the 2nd XI will be hosting Ipplepen CC 3rd XI next weekend.

Player of the Day

A difficult decision between almost the veteran of the side Tom Drake and youngster Harry Passenger. Whilst Passenger might have only scored a sensible 17, he gave hope with his tidy bowling hence the award goes to Harry Passenger. As stated previously though it would be wrong also not to mention Blaise Baker’s innings. Yes out for 0 but the 28 balls he faced gave Torquay hope as it enabled Kesh Wijerathna to score valuable late runs.
