Dear Players, Members and Supporters yet to be Members !
It was a privilege to attend both matches last Saturday ( some of this and some of that ! ) and to see spirited and successful displays from our 1st and 2nd Xls. Many congratulations for the two victories with notable displays from our younger players. Not to take the gloss away from Club Chairman Ian Baker who achieved yet another Hat-Trick and four wickets but recognition is foremost upon Dan Western’s excellent maiden half century and our young batsmen in the 1st Xl who steadied the ship to take victory – well done, Noah Rider, Harry Passenger and James Tyler, the latter playing his first competitive game for Torquay. Continuing the “young” theme Sonny Baker and Noah Rider’s wickets earlier in the afternoon ensured that Torquay could chase a realistic total.
Congratulations to 1st Xl skipper, Chris Kelmere for leading his young team to victory and personally scoring 49 and to stand-in 2nd Xl skipper ( not for the first time ! ) Ben Passenger for guiding his team and not to forget our newly appointed cricket manager, Mike Pugh for overseeing a highly successful weekend.
There was good support and encouragement at both games. Abbotskerswell, who hammered Barton, are next due at the Rec on Saturday under the captaincy of former Torquay favourite Nick Watkin who will expect a tough battle and the 2nd Xl will travel all the way to Two Mile Oak – what a pity they cannot enjoy one of Abbots infamous teas !
Never to be forgotten – Ian and Sandra Western ( 2nd Xl umpire and scorer ) and of course, Nick Evanson who scored his 600th consecutive 1st Xl match - and is still young enough to start playing !
The old “boys” who supported the 1st Xl would also like me to thank the catering team at the hatch for their unstinting service.
Keep up the good work everybody and enjoy the matches !
Ken Jeffery, President.
