SONNY BAKER HEADING FOR THE U19 WORLD CUP

In these uncertain times, Torquay CC, are pleased to announce their up and coming star fast bowler, Sonny Baker, has been selected in the 15 man England squad for the 2022 U19 CWC.

Sonny will be joined in the squad, skippered Tom Prest (Hampshire CCC), by fellow Cidermen, James Rew and George Thomas. Somerset along with Lancashire are the only counties to have three representatives in the squad.

Those of a certain vintage will also remember the team’s coach, Richard Dawson, who while at Exeter University, turned out briefly for Exmouth and Devon, before a brief England career.

Prior to the upcoming edition of the event only three boys from Devon have played in previous editions: Ben Green and the Overton twins. (Tom Lammonby would have been a 4th but for a broken hand.)

The competition this time is being held in the West Indies from 14 January until 5 February 2022. England are in Group A based on Saint Kitts and Nevis, with Bangladesh, Canada and the UAE in the group.

England open their campaign on 16 January 2022 against Bangladesh (the reigning champions), followed by Canada on 18 January 2022 and the UAE on 20 January 2022. All the matches are at Warner Park – no David Warner doesn’t have connections; the ground is named after Sir Thomas Warner the explorer who established the first English colony on St Kitts.

If all goes according to plan there will be an island hop to Antigua and Barbuda on the 26 January 2022 with either India or South Africa waiting for the Young Lions at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in the quarter finals. The likely alternative would be a match against either of these sides at the Coolidge Cricket Ground, three days later, on 29 January 2022.

Should the Young Lions be successful in the quarter finals, no island hopping will be required with the semi-finals on either the 1 February 2022 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium or 2 February 2022 at the Coolidge Cricket Ground. (The latter ground actually has a bit of an infamous history as from 2004 until 2016 it was known as the Stanford Cricket Ground – need more be said!)

The Final is on 5 February 2022 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Good Luck Sonny and let’s hope you can bowl England to success after their lowly 9th place finish last time!
