FRED MORRIS RIP

Torquay Cricket Club have been informed of the sad passing of Heffle Cuckoo's legend, Fred Morris and wish to send their condolences to Fred's family.  An obituary from the his club is below:

Itis sad to announce that Freddie Morris, our long-standing Heffle Cuckoos CC organiser, secretary, fixture secretary etc. and fine slow left arm round bowler, died on Tuesday 21st November, aged 89.

Fred was a Champion boxer in his youth, joined the RAF, followed by a long successful career in football, from Ramblers FC to Tonbridge Angels FC, where he played for 5 years, then a number of clubs thereafter; Ilford FC, Bromley FC, Herne Bay FC, Maidstone FC, Bromley FC again, Tunbridge Wells United FC and Eastbourne FC.  He then played cricket for Tunbridge Wells CC, as well as the touring side Heffle Cuckoos CC, who have toured in Devon continuously every year since 1947.  Fred had been on about 60 of those tours.

Fred has been living in Tonbridge and was invited to the Tonbridge Angels FC (TAFC) to attend their “A night With The Legends” Dinner on 10th November to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Club. Because of his medical situation, he was unable to attend, even though he was the oldest surviving Club player, but TAFC came to his house to record a video message to the attendees at the Dinner. It was very well received on the night.  TAFC also put an article on Fred in their brochure for their next League match and this is attached. He was a very talented footballer.

Fred was a hugely likeable and friendly person, who was well respected for his selfless contribution to cricket, specifically in keeping the Cuckoos going for decades. He leaves behind him many hundreds of people who have enjoyed his company, laughing with him over the years.

As our current Chairman Roger Waller has said, “To me, Fred was a supreme example of selflessness, and he possessed a deep-seated desire to make sure others were able to enjoy themselves, as he had done, over many decades of Cuckoos touring.”

He will be sorely missed, but will always be remembered. Rest In Peace dear friend.
